The second-grade book is designed as a chapter book specifically for the academic, social, and emotional development of second-grade children. The book highlights African-American excellence through the people featured in the stories being told. The book is grounded in developmentally appropriate pedagogy while conveying the NCSS Standards for early grades learning expectations.
The book is designed to familiarize second graders with relatable stories about trailblazers who present them with possibilities for their future endeavors while helping them understand African Americans’ important place in the world. Chapter 1 of the book focuses on scientists. Chapter 2 places the focus on inventors. In Chapter 3, students will meet some African-American authors and learn about their books. Chapter 4 features African-American Leaders who effected a change.
